The invention of the hang drum was in Bern, Switzerland. Felix Roner and Sabina Scharer was the one who did the scientific research into making the hang drum a reality. But artist got their  inspiration from the steel pans of the Caribbean islands. Needed modifications were needed in order for the two artists to create their very own instrument. The introduction of the hang drum world started in Germany in the year 2001.

Through the use of precise hammering, the notes can be tuned on top half of the instrument. You will be able to create different notes depending on how hard you strike the hammer. The name of the notes are the crown, heart, trunk, root and foundation. It is on the top half of the instrument that you will be able to tune the instrument. The arrangement of the instruments are from low to high and have eight notes. To be harmonious, all notes must be tuned. Gu is the name called for the bottom of the drum but is actually located on the sides. If you want to create a bass note, you have to hit the center of the drum.

In the year 2001-2005, the development of the hang drum started. But the popularity of the instrument exceeded the expectations of the developers. But the two artists gave in to the pressure and stopped developing the instrument. The two artists avoided the prying eyes of the public in order for then to have time to develop the instrument further. It was then that the two artists announced to the distribution and instrument shops that the supply of the hang drum will no longer be available. The second generation of the hapi drum are already on the work after they announced the discontinuation. The second generation of the hang drum was then introduced in 2006. After a decade of research and development, the two artists then announced that they already have the final design of the hang drum and it is called the integral hang. Seven tone fields and only one scale, that is the design of the new hang drum. In order to improve the tuning, the Gu hole was also adjusted.

It was until end of 20013 that the free integral hang was only made. So in the beginning of the year 2014, the original hang drum is no longer available in the market.

Based on the hang drum, the two artist now introduces a new instrument called the Gubal. The clear difference of the two instruments is that it is extended, larger with more rounded chamber, it also emphasizes the Gu sound better. The sound of the high and low notes are more noticeable with the Gubal. With just the use of your hand, you will be able to play the Gubal. The name Gubal was because of how the Gu sound came out.
